How it works

Most name lists just dump 100 options on you in no particular order. This one is different: every suggestion comes with a score and a short reason it made the list. The score looks at the number of syllables, the sounds where the two names meet, whether they start with the same letter, how close the two styles are, and — for siblings and twins — whether the names rhyme or one is far more common than the other.

Because the score is built from the names' own properties, every page is different: the best middle names for Liam are not the same as the best for Olivia, and neither is a generic top-50 list.

Read exactly how the scores are built on the how we score page. Name popularity, origin and historical rankings come from US Social Security Administration records for the United States; the style, ending-sound and syllable labels used for pairing are added by Mithila Labs and checked by hand.

What you can look up

• Middle names — for the first name you have chosen, scored for flow.
• Sibling names — brother and sister names that match a child you already have without sounding like a matched set.
• Twin names — coordinated pairs, same-sex or boy/girl, with a hard check against rhyming.
